WHOA!!! I think you may be the 1st person I've ever heard that said the '72-'74 DS's aren't enjoyed very much by you. For me, this was when they were pefromed at their best.
2/15/73 in Wisconsin is cosmic bliss @ it's finest. But it's all apples & oranges isn't it?

Indeed apples & oranges...
BUT the thing is, I DO love many of those '72-'74 'Stars...up to a point. The classic 11/11/73 DarkStar is a perfect example....up to the section where Jerry sings the verse, it's beautiful....jazzy, etherial, jamming, interesting...and then after Jerry sings, Phil starts banging away on his bass w/no one else playing, some atonal feedback pours in, and to my ears it's just a lot of annoying noise--it ceases to be a song. Most of the DS's of that era follow that pattern (as do many of the PITB's), and some love it...but i'm much more interested in the parts that are--well, more musical.
That's why the DS from 12/31/78, th 1/10/79 and the '84 Greek Theater encore are to me, better Dark Stars.

My God, my good friend...we do agree on this (har, we have on other points as well; been a while though!).
This is one of the main reasons I prefer the 68-70 versions. I know, I know, often not as complex (some in 68 are down right redundantly simplistic), but far more satisfying for me.
I have tried and tried to listen to the 72-74 versions of DS and not one have them has been played more than twice (ie, I think I may not have gotten it the first time on a CLIFF or GOP recommendation, so I play it at least once more...and never again...yet.). I have listened to some from 68, 69 or 70 literally dozens of times...
Oh well; keeps us talking, eh?

Yep--talking is good!
It's amazing listening to some of those infancy DarkStars from '68, etc....they seem so innocent in a way...but they're great! I mean, one need look no further than the legendary Live/Dead (which i guess is '69, but you get my point)...there was something about that TC organ sound that welcomes the beginning of the song and kind of loops it along--it's really very bright and cheery (odd for "Dark Star") but again, more musical and for that reason satisfying.
I know this is your favorite era, but do try some of those late 70's suggestions...the 12/31/78 Farewell to Winterland, which flows into a terrific "Other One", is especially brilliant.

Ah yes--do have a smattering of DS--OO, and the like from 77 & 78 that I found different, but interesting. Recommendations from folks here when I first arrived sometime in the early paleolithic era. Will dig (har) those out.
